Under the leadership of Federal Minister IT and Telecom, Dr. Umar Saif, the Ministry of IT convened a meeting with representatives from the IT industry and telecom companies to explore strategies for enhancing broadband fiber connectivity across Pakistan. This crucial discussion centered on identifying solutions to overcome existing challenges and pave the way for a more robust digital infrastructure.

Telecom companies brought to light the obstacles hindering their efforts to expand fiber connectivity, particularly the difficulties they encounter when working at railway crossings. They cited exorbitant charges and complexities associated with digging for fiberization purposes. Additionally, the implementation of decisions related to Right of Way (RoW) by Appropriate Governments was raised as a concern.

Demonstrating the government’s unwavering commitment to advancing fiber connectivity, Dr. Umar Saif requested comprehensive details regarding railway crossings nationwide. He also requested a report on the implementation of RoW-related decisions, signaling the government’s proactive approach to streamlining the process.

Recognizing the transformative impact of broadband fiber connectivity, Dr. Saif underscored its crucial role in propelling Pakistan’s economic growth.

He stated, “For every 10% increase in mobile broadband adoption, we witness a 0.5 – 0.8 percent increase in GDP. Therefore, incentivizing broadband fiber connectivity is essential for stimulating our economy.”

Emphasizing the recent standardization of RoW policies for laying fiber, Dr. Saif re-affirmed the government’s dedication to fostering a conducive environment for telecom players and ISPs.

“I was privileged to chair this meeting with industry representatives to formulate policies that accelerate broadband fiber connectivity in Pakistan.”
